our volunteers
Horse program meetings and events are planned, managed and
staffed entirely by volunteers. Volunteers are usually horse project club leaders, 4-H alumni, members of the horse community and parents, friends and relatives of horse project members. It is expected that a parent, guardian, relative or other responsible adult associated with each 4-H horse project member who participates in any of these events will provide approximately one half day of volunteer service at one of these events per year. Families with 4-H members in their first year of showing will not be expected to volunteer at shows or during times when the first-year member is exhibiting; however, they are encouraged to assist with other events and/or at shows where the member is not exhibiting. The intent of this policy is to set an expectation for volunteer service to the horse project. Club leaders should make parents aware of both the expectation and volunteer opportunities.

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
Jim Luty 2008-09
I became involved with 4-H 5 years ago when my daughter Elizabeth Joined the Golden Horseshoes club. After a year we joined Hooved Angles and finally Mounted Mischief. I have been the State Fair Coordinator the past 3 years and now the President. Elizabeth is no longer in 4-H but is attending Walla Walla Community College becoming a Ferrier. I decided to stay on because I felt I owed horse program so much in Elizabeth's development into a young lady. I enjoy watching our youth grow through their interactions with their animals and the strides they make working with them.

Kari Ward 2006-07
I have been involved with 4-H for about 10 years now, I have been a leader of the Happy Hayburners for 7. Our club has about 15 members ranging from 5-18. I enjoy working with the 4-H program and being able to be a positive influence in the lives of young people.
Horses have always been my passion from the time I was a small child. I, myself was in the Golden Horseshoes 4-H club all through middle school and high school. I can't imagine a life without horses! I appreciate so much the opportunity to serve such wonderful young people.
Tricia Williams 2005-06
I came to the 4-H horse program with my horse crazy 10 year old daughter in 2002-2003. Having had a largely unrequited horse passion as a girl myself, I was looking forward to getting to know some local horse people and maybe finding a place for my daughter to take some riding lessons. Seven years and many, many riding lessons later, I can say that my daughter’s and my 4-H horse adventures have enriched our lives in ways that we never expected; we have learned an incredible amount about horses, about ourselves, and about life. Besides being the general leader of Evergreen Equestrians 4-H club which I helped establish in 2005, I have served as horse program secretary and vice president as well as judging chair, hippology coach, and state qualifying coordinator. I have been privileged to meet and work with some fine young people and some outstanding adult volunteers, and I absolutely love getting to know the many fine equines as well!
